John Cooper was educated at the Wheelwright Grammar School, Dewsbury and worked for three years in a rag mill (textile recycling industry) before entering journalism at the age of 19. (He attended Textile College and claims to be the only poet with a City and Guilds qualification in Shoddy and Mungo manufacture!)
In a 12 year journalistic career, he was a staff reporter and feature writer for The Dewsbury Reporter,Telegraph and Argus (Bradford), the Yorkshire Evening Post Leeds), and Daily Express. After journalism, he was the Press Officer for David Brown Tractors and then head of PR for The Shepherd Building Group, the UK’s biggest privately owned builders.
As an independent consultant, he was a principal in a worldwide PR network. He has among others, been in charge of public relations activities for the York Minster Appeal (1967-73), the Prince of Wales Great Ormond Street Appeal (in Yorkshire only) and business generation programmes for Barclays Business Centres, Unilever Polymers, Ranks Hovis McDougal Ingredients, Warner Bros (film distribution), British Sugar and Portakabin Ltd.
He is an award winning creator of motivational employee communications (audio and print), and has written and directed numerous promotional films and product launch treatments.
He was involved in the formulation of modules within the Hons Degree course in PR instituted at Leeds Metropolitan University where he was a visiting lecturer and also lectured to business studies classes in other tertiary educational establishments in Leeds.
John Cooper holds a BA (Hons) degree in Creative Writing from the University of Hull.
